MUSKOGEE, Okla. – Fifty-six Oklahoma School for the Blind students will volunteer May 1 for the school’s
annual “OSB Gives Back Day.”
Following a panel discussion about the importance of volunteering, four groups of students and sponsors will head out from 9:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.to locations around Muskogee.
Some students will pop in to do random acts of kindness at the Muskogee police department and fire stations.
A fifth group will assist with projects on the OSB campus.
“We have groups going to the Muskogee animal shelter, Gospel Rescue Mission, RISE Women's Shelter, Dogwood Creek Retirement Home, Country Gardens Retirement Home and some doing good deeds here on campus,” OSB science teacher Cheryl Daniels-James said.
Daniels-James first organized “OSB Gives Back Day” in 2012 to introduce students to the benefits of community service.
“We are so fortunate at the School for the Blind,” Daniels-James said. ”People in the community are always so generous to our students. I told them, ‘Let’s show people that we can contribute and give back in appreciation for their generosity.’’’
“The opportunity to volunteer in the community helps our students develop communication skills, interact with new people and overcome shyness,” OSB Superintendent Rita Echelle said. “It’s important that they learn to the contribute in the community so that they will be better prepared to fill the shoes of community leaders when they become adults.”
The Oklahoma School for the Blind educates students in preschool through 12th grade with free training in Braille, maximum use of low vision, orientation and mobility and adaptive technology in addition to a comprehensive academic program that meets all state requirements. OSB staff provide thousands of free outreach services each year for students attending local public schools, including free evaluations, in-service teacher training and recommendations for classroom modifications and equipment that help students reach their full potential. OSB is a division of the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services.
