People With Disabilities Awareness Day 2007 Set for April 11th
OKLAHOMA CITY— With a century of success for this great state behind us, the
Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services (DRS) wants to continue that
success by keeping disabilities issues and advancements at the forefront. DRS
invites the public to the Annual People With Disabilities Awareness Day 2007
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 11 at the State Capitol.
This year, bringing an added surprise to those attending will be Sissy Gorbet, a
toy Australian shepherd who uses a prosthetic leg to greet the world. She proves
that disabilities don’t just affect the two legged animals. All who meet this
little dog are infected with her happiness and excitement.
Also in attendance will be Kyle Sherk, the Hanger Prosthetics engineer who
designed Sissy’s prosthetic device, “because she needed it.”
At People with Disabilities Awareness Day 2007 there will be legislative
advocacy training, visit with legislators to let them know what life with
disabilities is like and how they can help, and disability organization
exhibitors to show off the latest technological advancements or just to give
valued information.
Entertaining those in attendance will be the Oklahoma School for the Blind Jazz
Band and the Oklahoma School for the Deaf Performing Arts Company dancers. DRS
will hold its annual award ceremony to honor those who help improve DRS’ ability
to improve disability issues or help with education of disabilities.
Without the support of the People with Disabilities Awareness Day sponsors,
Oklahoma Rehabilitation Association, Goodwill Industries (OKC), Great Plains
Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Ned’s Catering and the Oklahoma Department of
Rehabilitation Services, this event would not be possible.
Registration is free for all who would like to attend. Please pre-register
online at www.okrehab.org or call (405) 951-3478 or (800) 845-8476. Phone
reservations are accepted.
